What if they won't go?
Voluntary because it works better, not because the law ties our hands
It's the question we're asked most on the phone, and the one that pushes families toward an anexo. It deserves a full answer.
Mexican law does allow involuntary admission in specific medical circumstances, under strict criteria. We won't tell you it's always illegal, because it isn't. We'll tell you that we don't work that way — and that it's a clinical decision, not a technicality.
Forced admission does not improve long-term outcomes. Here in Tijuana, peer-reviewed research found that mandated admission multiplied the violence risk patients perceived by 3.6 times. And an anexo operates under no medical framework at all: Mexico's own government documents that most residential facilities in the country run with no regulation whatsoever.
What you can check is the other side of it. To operate legally, a clinic needs an aviso de funcionamiento filed with COFEPRIS, a named responsable sanitario, and compliance with NOM-028-SSA2-2009. We have all three, and we show them to you before anyone is admitted.
